En premier lieu, l’année de PACES 0 est une année de consolidation des notions essentielles de Terminale en vue du programme de PACES. L’année va également permettre de découvrir de nouvelles disciplines, mais elle va aussi être consacrée à mettre au point une méthode de travail afin de ne pas se laisser submerger par la quantité de cours à apprendre. Elle intègre les techniques de prise de notes, de rédaction d’une fiche de synthèse, les pratiques favorisant la mémorisation. Elle intègre aussi la capacité à établir un planning de travail et à le respecter avec la plus grande régularité.

L’efficacité de la prépa PACES 0 tient aux conditions d’étude, au rythme imposé laissant le temps d’approfondir le cours et d’assimiler les notions nouvelles. L’entraînement à la résolution d’exercices et de QCM ne prend pas la forme d’un bachotage à grande vitesse, seule solution restant à l’étudiant lorsqu’il n’a pas réussi à comprendre son cours. L’efficacité de la prépa tient aussi à la considération apportée à l’étudiant, à la prise en compte de son potentiel. Les professeurs cherchent aussi souvent que possible à valoriser les étudiants, à ne pas les rabaisser, sans pour autant les tromper sur leur niveau réel. Enfin, les entretiens avec les responsables, permettent souvent de trouver des améliorations possibles, lorsque arrivent les périodes de doute.

Dans chacune des disciplines, les professeurs présentent le cours, prennent le temps de l’expliquer, de le commenter, et l’enrichissent d’exemples concrets. Les étudiants prennent des notes mais, tous les chapitres sont rédigés sur polycopiés. Ces documents sont remis aux étudiants en début de semestre. Ils peuvent en prendre connaissance avant la séance ; cette lecture anticipée est un travail efficace pour une bonne assimilation des notions nouvelles.

Pour guider l’étudiant dans sa lecture du cours, pour attirer son attention sur les points essentiels et pour extraire du cours ce qui doit d’abord être mémorisé. Les professeurs rédigent des fiches de synthèse pour chaque chapitre.
L’étudiant ne doit pas se contenter de stocker ces fiches ; il doit se les approprier en y apportant des renvois ou des annotations personnelles.

Le professeur remet aux étudiants, à l’occasion de chaque nouveau chapitre, un fascicule d’exercices. Lorsqu’il le distribue, il en commente le contenu, met en garde contre les pièges et signale par avance les questions les plus difficiles. Les étudiants ont donc,en permanence, deux ou trois fascicules sur lesquels ils doivent travailler. Il est en effet essentiel qu’ils s’entraînent et traitent un maximum d’exercices et de QCM.
